How I spent my Monday night.

downtown polaroid

Fell asleep while checking Google Reader last night, so I never got around to posting. I found this polaroid while I was cleaning the other day. I really love it even though (or probably because) it’s overexposed. Sadly, I have no working scanner at home, so this is a photo of a photo and consequently the quality is awful.

#40 now for something completely different

Right, so, this isn’t a photograph, but it’s similar and I did take it, so here it is. Not particularly compelling in that it’s not something New and Different and Revolutionary, but it’s something I figured I’d capture.

Yes, I do enjoy driving sometimes, especially when I’m alone and it’s dark out and it’s warm enough to open the windows and I have good (loud) music playing on the car stereo. It’s Riverside Dr., obviously, if you’re from Tulsa or if you know me well enough. I could do plenty of gushing about how theraputic driving around alone, at night, is for me, but I’ll spare you.

For those that are curious, the little snippet of song that’s playing is “England Just Will Not Let You Recover” by French Kicks. Also, attempting to (and I suppose succeeding in) holding a camera while you’re driving probably isn’t the best idea in the world. Just so you know.

Mac Mini as SNES

This is the post where I am a big dork. I’m hesistant to admit how much time I spent playing this today.

hopefully, the price is right

I’ve never been good at pricing my own artwork. I think it’s hard for most artists, especially since there’s such a fine line between just right and too much and every artist is emotionally attached to their artwork no matter what they say. It’s even more difficult when you’re trying to sell artwork in a place like Tulsa, Oklahoma, which has all the charm in the world, but not enough art savvy citizens.

My experiences this summer have proved to be quite beneficial. I priced most of my artwork in my solo show just a little bit lower than I would have liked. And a lot of it sold. I can’t say that I’m disappointed in the slightest. Made a mistake at Momentum Tulsa however, and set the prices waaaaay too low. Both of those pieces sold too. I was even told that I could raise my prices significantly and still get them to sell, but it’s not like I’m disappointed in that sell either. I guess my reasoning is that I spent a lot less time on those little Momentum pieces than on all of work in the solo show. But is that a good way to price artwork? What exactly are the guidelines for pricing anyway? Are there any?

It’s probably going to take a little while longer for me to find the sweet spot. With my artwork now being sold at The Beholder, an online gallery of sorts based out of San Francisco, I guess I’m going to find out if the price is right. Among other things…[My artwork on the Beholder is here for your perusal.]

Painting — May @ August 9, 2007, 12:14 am

Right, so this is my first proper WIP post since…then beginning of summer? What a shame.

I’m working on this painting that was the subject of my first one-a-day post (I took a picture of it on July 3rd, but I really began painting on June 16th, right after Momentum with a large bottle of rum right beside me). It’s looking more like this right now. I like it a lot better in its current state than I did when I began it. The alcohol probably made me do all of the crazy shit. Or I’m just making excuses for my poor judgement in trying new things. Either way, it’s a big closer to what I’m accustomed to, but I’m leaning more towards atmospheric paintings. Too safe? (There are other ideas brewing in my head right now, but they’re being saved for a different medium) I’m reintroducing the text and I’m probably going to continue with it for a few other paintings. Throughout high school, Mr. Shen was always very skeptical about my use of text, but I stand by my decision of making it illegible. A glimpse into what’s really happening but without exposing too much. At least that’s how I look at it.
