road block

blog — May @ February 25, 2008, 8:38 pm

Trying to come up with ideas for the 2008 Momentum Tulsa logo, hitting many road blocks. Trying to avoid thinking about my Advanced Design homework. Trying to figure out what I’m going to do with this Justice poster – perhaps edits are necessary, perhaps they are not. The type and the composition just look and feel right to me. Maybe I’ve just spent too much time looking at it. I can’t even screenprint it tonight like I had planned because the studio is overrun by the kids in the Tuesday Screenprinting class, attempting to finish their work before it’s due. I might try to finish it in the morning, but that may or may not happen depending on the morning class. Is it so wrong that I just want to print this and have it be finished? It’s been a month since I’ve started working on this. That’s just too much time.

Anyway, back to work.

a taste of what I’ve been doing

Screenprinting — May @ February 23, 2008, 8:45 pm

Screenprint Monoprint, Blue #1

Screenprint Monoprint, Blue #9

Screenprint Monoprint, Blue #12

The second series of screenprint monoprints. Each monoprint has 8-10 colors. A new method to making films – monotyping using an open screen & black ink onto duralar and true grain films. Produces really great organic shapes, textures &c.

untitled screenprint #1
My first editioned print of the semester, no title yet. I’m really happy with this. Not the end all be all, but it’s really exciting to find a process that works for me. Used the same films that I used for the monoprints above, but started cutting them up and taping them together. Many thanks to Nick for the suggestions.

Justice poster, half size test
First CMYK screenprint. A half-size test for the Justice poster that I’m going to print. Just trying to get the color separations & inks right. I’ve got a little tweaking to do, but I’m pretty pleased with it.

getting ready to shoot again

I shot all of these today using the little set up for my GD Senior Seminar. You can see the rest of what I shot (including some older prints and design work) here.

Productive day despite waking up a full two hours later than I wanted to. Screenprinted five colors, made a late lunch, gathered things to photograph, photographed them, made copies for my next litho print and spent an ungodly amount of time looking at/uploading/tagging the photos that I took.

I’ve spent just about every weekend since the semester started screenprinting or printing in some way shape or form. Wouldn’t change a thing.

Jason, assuming you really do read this as often as you say…Are you happy now? I’ve posted. And there are images of new work. It’s your turn!

excitement!

Screenprinting,printmaking — May @ February 21, 2008, 9:21 pm

Two color lithograph

Finished this last week and just got around to curating and scanning it. Yet to be named lithograph. First time doing multiple colors, first time using tusche. I love litho. It kicks my ass on a regular basis, but I love it. Spent a good portion of day brainstorming. I talked to Brian for a while and he filled my head with ideas. I think I know what I want to work on for the rest of the semester.

After class, I visited Nick’s print shop. Blown away. Absolutely crazy exposure unit. Can’t even describe. I’m really excited to print there, he’s got a print table with a ‘one-arm’ squeegee. It’s still manual printing, but there’s an arm that holds the squeegee and you basically guide it down a track to print. Lots of pressure. I can print something large(r) without having to worry about 1) not being able to reach to pull the squeegee or 2) not being to apply enough pressure over such a large area. Excitement.

Basically, all I want to do right now is print. Too bad it’s past eleven and it’s ridiculously cold outside…

Justice, round three

I think I like this one best.
It’s the last stretch of the Justice poster, these are the last tweaks. I think I like the last one the best, even with the long and skinny crop. The printing should happen this weekend or early next week, depending on when I get my paper. Did I mention I just spent $100 on paper? Yeah. But it should last me for a while, especially the many many sheets I bought for my Adv. Screen project. That class and litho are the most exciting of the semester, most definitely.

catching up

Screenprinting,design — May @ February 17, 2008, 11:19 pm

Busy doesn’t even begin to describe my life. Here are a few things that I’ve been working on:

Justice poster mock

Justice poster mock 2

Justice poster mock up

Justice poster mock up

Justice poster mock ups from the first one I made to the most recent. Eventually this will be screenprinted.

screenprint monoprints

screenprint monoprints

A series of screenprint monoprints. Better (and more) pictures of these coming soon. I’ve got another series in blue, and my first editioned screenprint of the semester (still in progress). I also just finished a two-color lithograph that I’ll get a picture of soon.

Been thinking a lot (too much) about my life post-graduation and I think I’ve made myself a little crazy in the process. There’ll be more later, I’ve got to get some sleep tonight.

schedule

thesis — May @ February 1, 2008, 9:43 pm

Proposed projects for the semester

  • Show poster: Justice at Sonar, March 9
  • Show poster: Stephen Malkmus and the Jicks at the 9:30, March 28
  • Show poster: Autechre at the Black Cat, April 17
  • Art show poster: solo show at Artifacts, July
  • Event poster / promotional items: Momentum Tulsa, event is mid-June (promo items should be done early May?)

Proposed schedule:

February 5 – set schedule, decide on bands for show posters, sketches/concepts for the first poster
February 12 – refined color concept
February 19 – finished posters (edition of 30*), sketches/concept for second poster
February 26 – refined color concept
March 4 – finished poster (edition of 30), sketches/concept for third poster
March 11 – refined color concept
March 18 – finished poster (edition of 30), sketches/concept for solo show poster
March 25 – refined color concept
April 1 – sketches/concept for Momentum Tulsa
April 8 – finished solo show poster (edition of 75)
April 15 -
April 22 -
April 29 -
May 6 -
May 12? – This is the extra exam day, but I’m putting it on here just in case I need an extra week to get everything printed.

I realized that I can’t fill everything in yet because I don’t know when the deadlines for Momentum are. Assuming those deadlines aren’t extremely early, this is the general schedule.

*edition of 30, so I’m not using a whole lot of paper for a poster that I may or may not be selling. If I can swing a deal with the venue, I can always print more.
